Acting:
-
This is a simple concept.
It simply means to put on a show. Let's say you do not want the other player
to know you got the nuts. So you act as if you have to think about
making a call instead of just jumping in and re-raising the other player's
bet. Why do this?
-
You may be able to get more money out of the other player if they
put you on a hand other then the one you have.
-
They certainly won't call any bets if they know you have the nuts and can't be beat.
Bluffing:
-
This means to make a bet at the pot in order to try to win it without having a hand.
Bluffing in the right spots during a game can win it for you.
Why do this?
-
It may be the only way you can win the hand.
-
To see how strong or weak your opponents are.
-
To test your reading skills, if you put your opponent on a weak to
mediocre hand and believe that they would fold to a big bet then maybe
you should bluff.
-
If they call with a bigger hand than you thought you may need to
work on your reading skills.
-
If they call with the weak hand you put them on. You may need
re-evaluate this player or maybe you gave a tell when you were bluffing.
-
If a bluff fails at least you gain information.
Expected Value:
Expected Value is how much you expect to win on a hand in the long run.
The way you calculate expected value is (percentage chance of winning * pot size).
Lets assume you have a 50% chance of winning a $120 pot with a
certain hand. Sometimes you will win $120 and sometimes you will win $0. Your
expected value is $60
Implied Odds:
-
The odds you are getting after the assumed result of betting for the remainder of the hand.
-
So, if you have AK of hearts and the flop comes
two hearts your implied odds are what you have to call at the flop
compared to how large the pot will be at the end of the hand.
-
Since I think these guys are going to call a big
bet on the river if a catch my flush, my implied odds are excellent.
Outs:
-
How many cards are left in the deck to make your hand.
-
You are four to a flush on the flop you have nine outs left.
-
You are one card from a straight flush and that is
the only card that will help you. You have one out. Your implied
odds may be great but you only have one out is it worth the call to draw
to that one out? You will have to consider the pot odds and estimated
value to make the right decision.
Pot Odds:
-
The odds you get when analyzing the current size of the pot vs. your next call.
There is $100.00 in the pot you have to call $50.00 to stay in your pot odds are 2-1.
Reading:
-
Being able to put your opponents on a hand by evaluating their actions and behavior.
If you can read you opponents well you will be able to tell more easily if you are beat.
You will save money by being able to lay down a big hand if you know
your opponent caught their draw.
You will be able to gain money by knowing if an opponent is
bluffing.
