Setting up the game At the start of a Texas Hold’em poker game the Dealer shuffles a standard 52-card deck. The dealer sets the dealer button by flipping one card up in front of each player the high card gets the button. The Dealer Button moves clockwise from player to player with each hand. The Button marks which player would be the dealer if the game was self-dealt. The Blinds There are no antes required from the players in a Texas Hold'em poker game (although they are sometimes used in tournaments along with the blinds). Instead there are two forced bets called Blinds. The game begins with the two players to the left of the dealer button putting a predetermined amount of money into the pot before any cards are dealt. In tournaments this amount is increased in a time pattern in order to ensure the elimination of players. Most often the Small Blind, the player to the immediate left of the dealer, puts up half the minimum bet and the player on his left, the Big Blind, puts up the full minimum bet. This is called "posting the blinds." In a cash game the player immediately to the left of the Big Blind may choose to become a third Blind by placing a bet of double that of the Big Blind before the cards are dealt. This is known as a live Straddle. The Deal Each player is dealt two cards face down know as the Hole Cards or Pocket Cards. The player keeps their value a secret carefully shielding the cards with one hand while turning a corner of them up to view them. The Hole Cards must stay on the table but may be momentarily raised to ensure that a player has full sight of them. They must then be placed back on the table but may be looked at any time during the hand by the player to whom they were dealt. First Betting round The first round of betting takes place immediately after the Deal. The first player to act is the player to the left of the Big Blind or Straddle. To Call the player places a bet that is equal to the Big Blind or Straddle. To Raise the player adds an additional amount. The size of this amount varies with the type of game being played:
When any hand touches the Muck it has been folded. That player can take no further part in the hand and any bets he/she has made are forfeit. Subsequent players have the same three options, plus the option to Re-Raise . The Flop After the first betting round the dealer discards the top card of the deck. This is called the Burn Card. The Burn Card is placed in the Muck. The dealer then places the next three cards face up on the table. These cards are called the Flop. Second Betting Round This round and all subsequent betting rounds start with the first player to the dealer's left that is still in the hand. This player can chose to Call, Raise, or Check. Checking will allow the player to stay in the hand without betting as long as no one else bets. If a bet has been made a player may choose to Call for that amount or Raise. If a bet and a Raise have been made before a players turn to act the player can either Call or Re-Raise as long as the maximum amount of raises has not been met. If a player chooses to do neither they must Fold. At the end of the round all players who stayed in the hand will have put in an equal amount of bets except when a player has an inadequate amount of chips in front of him:
The Turn After the completion of the Second Betting Round the dealer Burns another card and the next card is exposed and added to the Board. This the Turn card. Third Betting Round
This betting round proceeds as the second
betting round with the exception of Limit Games:
The River After the completion of the Third Betting Round the dealer Burns another card and the fifth and final community card is exposed and added to the Board. This is the River card.Fourth Betting Round This is the final round of betting in the hand. It proceeds exactly as the previous round of betting did. This precedes the Show-Down, when the players must reveal their cards. The best hand wins the round. If two or more players have the same hand the pot is split between them.
